Hiking with Kids

Hiking with kids can be difficult, but it doesn't have to be.  I like to be out and about most of the time and starting the kiddos at a young age will definitely help.  Because they have always walked and hiked since they were younger it comes easier to them when we do bigger or longer hikes.  Here are some tips that can help with them as well.
  • Talk to them prior to going on a hike about where you are going, what you will see, etc.... let them know before hand what is going on and they won't be as surprised.
  • Let them pick a snack and a drink to bring along on the hike as well.  Depending on how long the hike is, this will help along the route.  For example, on this last hike that we did we had a bag of Hi-Chew candies that came in handy and were used for motivation and bribery.
  • Give them small rewards when they finish the hike.  Whether it is a treat or something like that.  They will remember the hike itself as a fun experience.
  • Normally the kiddos ask a thousand questions, when you are hiking ask them questions about their favorite toy, or show.  For example, on this past hike D had to use the bathroom and we were hurrying but in between the wifey started talking to her about Sofia the First and her mind and though process completely shifted to Sofia and we were able to make it to the bathroom with out the constant questions and whining.  Seriously, try it, it works.
  • Look for hikes that have markers along the route.  The kiddos will love to find each marker and they almost race to each one. This gives them something to do along the route and helps pass the time as well.  We have been on hikes that mark each switchback, or some that have different colored signs, or even one here in Tacoma that has spray painted rocks along the path.  They love to look for the colors and move along to the next one.
  • Have one of the kiddos be the leader.  Let them go first on the trail and the others can follow.  Then at each break, rotate and have another kiddo lead the way.  This will help entertain as well along the trail.
These are just a few simple things that we have done with our kiddos that have worked for us.  Remember, the more you hike the easier it will become for you and the kiddos.  Best of luck to you and your hiking adventures with the family!  Here are some of the pictures along the Columbia River down in Oregon.  The Pacific Northwest sure is beautiful!
